Well the "hot fix" that expired 5/19/2009 and the SP3 download did NOT fix a
darn thing!!!
Downloaded SP3 and spent 4 hours on phone with Tech Support AND WinXp
Engineering.
AGAIN..once SP3 downloaded you CANNOT access internet with IE7/8!!!
The "hot fix" from last year, "SP3 Blocker Tool.exe expired and now
Microsoft has NO idea why this is still happening!!

No reason to have expected it to. The "hot fix" - actually the blocker tool -
simply prevented SP3 from being installed, it didn't fix your problem.

(Yes I can!)

Again, there's no reason why anything would have changed since the first time
you tried to install it.

Did you remember to uninstall any security software (except Windows Firewall)
you have running before installing service pack 3?

What sort of internet connection do you use? Have you checked to see if there
are more recent device drivers available? What do you get if you type

ipconfig /all

into a command window? (Go to Start Menu, select Run, type "cmd" and press OK.)

Harry.

First of all, you should never install an SP on a system that has problems.
If anything, the SP is likely to make things worse rather than better.

Secondly, as you can plainly tell, this sytem with XP SP3 and IE8 definitely
can access the internet. Last week, when I was still using IE7, the system
could access the internet.

My son's system can also access the internet using IE8. His testimonial to
that effect was what caused me to go to IE8.

So, my opinion is that there is something amiss with your system.

*Your machine* is messed up - with or without service pack 3.

Clean it up/repair it and/or find someone with the necessary skills to do
this for you. ;-)
