Problem: On a PC with the High Speed Wireless G Card runing WinXP Pro a
process called WinXPDisableZeroConfiguration.exe is taking up 50% CPU all the
time. The exe is installed as part of the driver for this card.
On a Laptop with the Notebook card runing WinXP Home the same process is
taking about 95% CPU.

These machines connect to a Belkin ADSL Modem router.

Is there anyway to stop these processes taking up so much CPU?

This is pretty odd. If you do a web search on the file name you describe,
there are literally only 2 other people who have, in recent years, posted a
question about a file and/or process with this name.

I'm wondering if this isn't really some form of malware - like spyware or a
trojan? I've never seen a process like this before, and there's no reason for
a WiFi driver to install a process like this. When you install a WiFi driver,
you should still be free to indicate to Windows XP that you either want to
allow the drivers management program control your connection, or have Windows
manage your wireless connection. There's no reason for the driver install to
run something to disable your XP Zero config service.

Have you tried running Spybot and Adaware (as well as updated antivirus) on
these two machines?

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt333.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDoc...SysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible.
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

* * * Please report back your results * * *

Hi Max
I have this file on my pc as well. It was put there by my Belkin card's
installation software and is the Zero Config override file to disable XP's
WZC. I also have a large cpu usage via this file and have contacted Belkin
for advice. My system doesn't appear to be suffering which is causing me more
confusion!
I hope you haven't gone to all the trouble of Spyware applications as it
won't be necessary or helpful in resolving the issue.
If I get any further assistance I'll try and forward it here.
Mark
