Hi, I've just gpt a new laptop running Vista. On my old PC I connected to
the net with a DSL modem. I am not very computer literate so when I switched
on my laptop and done all the setup, this message came up that i was
connected to the net, as I had no modem attached, and no wireless router, I
thought htis a bit strange, so I done a bit off digging and came up with a
list of networks, and found I was connected to a Linksys public connection,
could anyone please explain this connetion to me, and will it harm my laptop,
I can get on the net no problem with a strong signal. Thank you in advance
for your help

Apparently your laptop came in with a network card and this card is wireless
or has wireless capabilities.

It found a linksys modem transmitting its signals around in search of
clients and found your laptop.

I am not sure what the best way for you to go at this point but I think you
may try to make sure that your password Sharing in Network setting is ON.
this way the linksys won't be able to break in.

It is ironic that many posters here would love to have exactly your problem.
They have extremely hard time of connecting to their wireless networks.

The answer is YES but..

It will give you some additional problems. You will have to assure a lot of
things to be in compliance across the network. this forum is full of people
trying to solve such problems. You will have to read some forums.

I also think that you perhaps have an option to turn the wireless OFF
somewhere in Control Panel>Network..... or in System>>System and
Management>Device Manager>> choose your Network card. There could be an
option to damp the wireless transmission. A more remote possibility is that
there might be a small switch on the card or you can just pull the antenna
out if it is pluggable. The latter intervention may not actually help, just
lower the signal.

Go into "Network and Sharing Center"
either via your connection icon in the
notification are (bottom right) or going
into Control Panel. You can also copy/paste
"Network and Sharing Center" into Vista's
Start Menu/Orb Search bar, press enter.

Beside the router you're connected to
it will say either "Private" or "Public" network.
Since this is not your router/network, be sure
it is set to "Public". To the right you will see
"Customize". Click it and set it to "Public".

Please, never do what this idiot all-non-knowhow MICHAEL has suggested, You
should never make your LAN public. It will open it to everyone, especially
malware writers like him. It is just outrageous what he does. Your goal is
to restrict your connection, take full control of it, not to open it to the
entire world. This MICHAEL idiot must be carefully watched. A really
antisocial character. What an outrage!

You are really one pitiful creature.... I almost feel sorry
for you. Do some reading before you post. Please.
How embarrassing it must be to be you.

How do I decide if I should chose the Private or Public Network Location?

Private Network Location If you are in your own home which is behind your routers firewall and
the only computers on your network are your own, then you would trust these other PCs so you
should set Vistas Network Location to Private, thus allowing your PC to be discovered and for
its resources to be accessed by your other PCs on your network.

Public Network Location If you were travelling or using your PC away from home for instance in
your Airlines Club Lounge, you would not and should not trust the other PCs on this network so
you should set Vistas Network location to Public. This will make your PC/Laptop fairly secure
on the network, and less likely to be hacked.

You are a pitiful creature! Read his original post. He never mentioned any
airline. He turned his brand new laptop on and lo and behold it is Internet
connected via a linksys he has never heard about. It is in his neighbor's
condo. Can you understand English? He wants to restrict his laptop from
doing it. Why in the world will he make his network public? What will it do
to solve his problem?

What if he stores some privileged information in that laptop? Perhaps his
company confidential files? Do you understand this, incorrigible idiot?

Just take your medications and keep quiet.

Naturally enough your laptop has Wi-Fi for wireless.

You are STEALING from someone's unprotected Wireless Network.

I'd love to be there with a Network Sniffer!

You have just advised a person to STEAL bandwidth.

You just proved that you are SCUM!
