The problem appears to relate to Microsoft (as opposed to Windows) Update. I
reset the laptop to its factory settings using my XP HE recovery disk.
Connection to Windows Update went OK, and I downloaded and installed a total
of 17 updates. I then opted to install Microsoft Update (I have Office XP)
and it was during that process that the wireless link to the router dropped.
Have reinstalled Windows once again, but this time I'm staying away from
Microsoft Update!
