I recently got a sony vaio laptop installed vista and my wireless router will
not work. I had no problems using it when I had my previous laptop, a HP
with windows XP. When i try to connect to the router I am trying to install
I get a message saying the computer cannot find any connection and to try
again, I can assure I have done all the steps correctly. I also tried to
connect to other wireless connections in my area as a test because i can't i
get a message saying cannot connect. (and I have checked that the WLAN is on
everytime). I tried looking through posts and what other people had
suggested, but nothing has worked. I also looked at forums for routers
people recommended and purchased another to give that a try, this one will
connect with the ethernet cord, but will not recognize the wireless function
and is useless as a wireless router. I would appreciate any advice and help.

Connect by wire, and open the wireless configuration. To do this you need
the address to your 'default gateway', which you obtain from a command
prompt command of 'ipconfig' Your router config will open from something
like: http://192.169.0.1 or whatever your default gateway is.

There are 3 types of wireless signal 8011 "b" and "g" and now "n". You must
have compatible signals, ie they must both be either compatible with "b",
"g" or "n". What type of wireless does your laptop use? And, what type
does your wireless router use?

It seems that whatever wireless card is on the Sony laptops is not very
good. There always seems to be some problem with the wireless and Vista on
those machines. I suggest that if you know someone with a USB wireless card
you should plug that into the laptop and see if you can connect.

There's 'a' as well, and pre-'a', but hardly anybody got that.

One of my laptops is a Sony Vaio Vista.

Try this simple fix:

Problem: User turns on wireless switch but no connection. Using diagnosis
tools results in a statement that says the circuit or LAN card is not
connected.

Fix: Go to task bar notification area at right bottom of screen. Click
green icon LAN. Select 2.5 MHZ (or 5MHz depending on system.) User will be
connected to wireless

Also, the Help and Support has good info regarding how to activate the LAN
and how to connect wireless. Go to Help and Support and enter LAN. There
should be a special "Vaio LAN" link.

If this fix doesn't work, and since it's a newly purchase Vaio, call or
chat-line with Sony tech support.

Hope this helps.
