We all have different opinions, and see different things as pros and
different things as cons. Here's my standard reply to questions like
this:

My view is that you're going about this backward. A change of
operating system should be driven by need, not just because there is a
new version available. Are you having a problem with Windows XP or
Vista (whichever you use) that you expect Windows 7 to solve? Do you
have or expect to get new hardware or software that is supported in
Windows 7, but not in XP or Vista? Is there some new feature in
Windows 7 that you need or yearn for? Does your job require you have
skills in Windows 7? Are you a computer hobbyist who enjoys playing
with whatever is newest?

If the answer to one or more of those questions is yes (and your
hardware is adequate for Windows 7), then you should get Windows 7.
Otherwise most people should stick with what they have. There is
*always* a learning curve and a potential for problems when you take a
step as big as this one, regardless of how wonderful whatever you're
contemplating moving to is. Sooner or later you'll have to upgrade (to
Windows 7 or its successor) because you'll want support for hardware
or software that you can't get in XP or Vista, but don't rush it.

I say all the above despite the fact that I'm a big Windows 7 fan. I
think it's the best and most stable of all versions of Windows.

However, if you are not having problems with Vista, or if you don't se
a need, you might as well save the money

I suggest finding a friend who is an expert in Windows to help you with the
set of tangled problems you describe in this and your other post.

Any attempt to help you with that mix up in a medium like newsgroups will
be very slow and incomplete, and can *not* replace having someone in front
of your computer seeing for him or herself what's going on.

Why is that a Vista problem? Find out what's wrong with your
computer--virus, spyware, malware.

In that case, you would be just as well off reformatting your disk and
reinstalling the OS and applications. If you upgrade in-place from
Vista to Windows 7 you will probably carry all your current problems
with you. You will still have problems and you will be $100 poorer.

Upgrading the OS is not a cure for a corrupt or misconfigured system.

install), chances are very high your problems will be resolved

If you reinstall Vista, your problems will be fixed too. Windows7 i
nice, but if you are on a budget, you might want to skip it. There ar
few things in Windows7 that you cannot do with Vista - there are als
some things you can do in Vista that are not available in Windows7
