I have 486 Mb with 10500 files in database.
Previously Outlook express 6 took about 50 Mb for the same emails and
ng messages.

AFAIK, WLM 2001 does not compact the message store, only the message index,
which should have marginal impact on your overall disk storage availability.

You can burn old messages (eml files) to CD, or move them to an external
drive, and delete them from WLM if you need to gain drive space. When you do
that they will no longer be searchable through WLM (Windows Search will
index eml files).

Ctrl + Shift + o

Advanced Tab

Maintenance Button

Make sure "Compact the database" is ticked, adjust number to "1 runs"

Close down WLM

Restart WLM

Reset number of runs if you want to.

Cheers..

Are you saying that your message database (Mail.MSMessageStore) is 486MB, or that your store folder weighs in at 486MB with 10500
files? The database file doesn't contain any messages, only headers and properties to the tune of 2-3KB per message. So a 'normal'
size for the database file would be 30MB if you have 10500 messages in WLMail. Compacting will only remove records of deleted files,
so that's not likely to save much space.

You mention NG posts. Could it be that your store folder still contains posts from NGs that you no longer subscribe to? WLMail has
never had a mechanism for removing such files, nor even from groups you visited without subscribing. It should be possible to delete
any such files from the store folder without upsetting the database too much. If you do find such files, once you've deleted them,
open WLMail and then close it again without doing anything, so the database can catch up.

If looking via Windows Explorer at your Windows Live Mail folder
C:\Users\<your windows logon name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live
Mail
....then you are seeing the entire WLM store folder and contents.

Scroll down and find the Mail.MSMessageStore file and compare that to the
size shown for the database in Advanced/Maintenance/Clean Up Now...they
should be comparable in size.

That comparison should also show(indicate) that WLM compacts the database
not the messages. Messages resides in their own accounts folders(and
subfolders).

Your messages(+10,000) unlikely(but possible) do not take up 486MB of
space. A fair amount of space after subtracting the size of
Mail.MSMessageStore in C:\Users\<your windows logon
name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail is usually due to the other
folders..the most notable being the Calendar database and Backup(redundant
Mail.MSMessageStore), log and temp files.

Very clear, I see one Mail.MSMessageStore 130 Mb and another
Mail.MSMessageStore 128 Mb in a backup directory.
Now WLM database managing is less mysterious.

Thanks to all American friends.
