Hi folks.
I have live messenger 8.1 installed, running on a xp sp2 system and for what
it is worth I use zonealarms pro.

my problem is: I can display the 'provided' pictures but if I change it to
one on file it shows up on this computer but does not display on any other
computers. I have tried using jpg, jpeg and gif files in an effort to sort
it out but the only pics I can transmit are the ones within the program. the
ball, duck, dog etc.

So my questions:

Am I missing a step? it should be just browse>select>apply> OK.
Do I need to copy the pic into another folder and if so what and where?

I can add the photo to the spaces.live site. both the messenger and general
sections so I can't understand why I can't do it in windows live.

one more question please.

Why does messenger keep dropping off line all the time.
i.e. having to keep 'connecting'?

thanks for your time

Greetings,

It sounds like you're having some connectivity issues which are preventing things from
working properly.

If you can't stay connected, then you're probably not able to send your display picture to
anyone within a reasonable amount of time either.

What kind of networking scenario are you in? Just at home, at work, or what?

Hi Jon.
It's a stand alone home computer, on dailup.
I treid to do the same thing on a notebook, which also runs wlm 8.1, xp ans
zonealarms suite and found that I couldn't display pics either.
so I am leaning toward the idea that the problem is in za somewhere. though
I could be wrong. I've been able to stay connected long enough to be able to
send (share family) files, so I can't see connectivity as being the issue.

thanks.

Hi,

I had a feeling you were going to say that. Make sure you have the latest updates for ZA.
There are well known long-term issues with Messenger and ZA throughout most of this century
causing exactly the issues you're describing.

If that doesn't help, I'd suggest removing ZA entirely (just temporarily to determine if that
is the real cause and if it is, then we can address configuring it better.

hey, i use ZA. and ever since they implemented the IM 'instant messaging'
protection in ZA afew versions back the emotions and display picture, and in
more recent versions of messanger like live 8.1 and the previous one the
flaky connection (i.e the drop outs and reconnects) have been occurring.

i turned my IM protection off and the display picture came back.

i only use MSN so i will only be chatting with peops i know so i don't worry
about system instrusions. not too sure about AOL and the others tho...

hope this helped.

Thanks sinner.

I'll give that a go and see what happens. If this doesn't work I'll just
stop using it. My grandson uses the one from yahoo and says it works ok so I
might give that a try. nothing to lose. ;->

I don't think the problem is in za. I shut it down on this computer and my
notebook but still it didn't display. so I'm stuffed if I know.

thanks again.

Hi,

In some cases, even just disabling it won't help -- you need to completely uninstall the
beast.
