WLM Alternatives

Is there a consensus choice for a WLM alternative
(Mail/Newsreader/Calendar)? I guess it depends on exactly what your issue is
with WLM (mine would be lack of quoting capability). But at a minimum I
would need to be able to load my existing (large) Mail database.

And a related question. Can Windows Mail load WLM email (News and Calendar
being less important)?

Thanks.

Mozilla Thunderbird comes to mind; has a Sunbird (calendar) plug-in
available.

Not sure; I no longer have Windows Vista to play with.

Regarding the 'related question'

Both WLM and WM save email and news files in the same format(*.eml and
*.nws)
The filename for each use the same type of nomenclature...a numerical
filename with an eml or nws extension. (0FBF2F14-00000065.eml or
575360BF-00000064.nws).

Both WLM and WM can open *.eml and *.nws files.

WM was released prior to WLM(its code was frozen in 2006) thus does not
have the ability to import messages from WLM's database.....though WLM eml
and nws messages can be dragged into WM(preferably to a user created folder
in WM) allowing WM to index the messages and rebuild its index and message
store.

These may be of help.

TB wouldn't automatically import mail/news from WLM. I was able to
export it to Outlook and then TB could import it from there. This may
be fixed by now though.

I know that you can go from Windows Mail to WLM but not sure about the
other way. Reason that I went to WLM to begin with was that I was
having problems with Windows Mail (mostly pdf attachments hanging my system)

I drag/dropped my WLM eml messages from WLM Local Folders into
Thunderbird, folder-by-folder. It was a bit tedious, and took about 30
minutes. There are other ways to do that. For IMAP accounts, everything
happens auto-magically!

News messages can be handled similarly if you first rename *.nws to
*.eml before dragging to Thunderbird. All my threads and references were
preserved AFAIK.

It was quicker for me to use Outlook for my mail because my IT guy
forces us to install Outlook. I don't use it but I had it. I have a
lot of business mail, already grouped in folders and such. The trick
with Outlook, is to make it your default, import your stuff from WLM and
then install TBird. TBird lets you import from outlook. But this only
worked for mail. For newsgroups I had to configure each server in TBird
and then add the groups. Your trick for the newsgroups would have been
better for me.

Just to be clear... what I did with newsgroup messages was for those I
had copied/stored to WLM's Local Folders.

Outlook doesn't import from WLM.
WLM does export to Outlook(using the Exchange option)

How did you get your contacts to work? I tried exporting to CSV and
importing to TB but that didn't work. The Outlook trick worked ok with
a few tweeks.
