WLM crashes upon trying to start webcam or Audio and video setup

Hello all,

First things first. Let me just say WOW, what a pain in the bottom. I had
run the 8.5 version (the newest one) ever since it came out. not a problem at
all. Then my bootsector on my drive ploped out, so I fixed that. Booted up
and WLM would not start gave me a "Windows Live Messenger has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." So.. I did
some reading and found I needed to do a fresh install of WLM. SOOOOO I did
that. and I got it to start up. Then I go to get my webcam working (which
BTW had worked previously for months with WLM) and every single time I go to
the "Audio and video setup" I once again get the "Windows Live Messenger has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience". This is getting plenty fustrateing since it all played nice
beforehand.... In fact everything was just fine and dandy until I installed
the lastest security patch off of the windows update.....

Any of you people in Microsoft know what the deal is???? Might be useful......

Oh and while I am at it.. here is a suggestion... Make your programs
uninstall ALL of their files and keys when you uninstall them. not leave
stuff all over the computer that you have to manually find and get rid of....
The just is no reason for that sloppiness

Oh yes. and I also forgot to mention that the webcam works in ALL other
instant messaing programs that i have. those include AIM, ICQ, and yahoo....

I have exactly the same problem. Upgraded and reinstalled everything and
still no luck. Been at it for days. Works fine in everything else. Anybody?

I fixed mine. However the only way I could find was to actually format and
reload my system. I don't know what it did, but it fubbed something up in the
upgrade. Reloaded, installed it and it works just fine again. (this time
however I made backups of the initial install so I can just redo the system
without the issues.. like having to call MS to activate my XP..........
which BTW is a pain too... especially when you can hardly understand the
indian, or malaysian, or indonesian person on the other end of the line...
long strings of numbers make for a long call......
