Hi Gerard,
When you're speaking on a VOIP application (Messenger, Skype, whatever), it's recording your
audio and transmitting it - when the other person(s) are speaking, it's receiving and playing
back their audio. That's all I meant.
Regardless it sounds like Skype is working fine, which at least shows the driver and inputs
are working alright. Messenger uses part of the built-in real-time communications API of
Windows and it sounds like they're either not working with your configuration or has been
damaged in some way.
Normally I wouldn't ask you to try this, but in this case it might be successful to fix the
problem - have you tried simply uninstalling Messenger and reinstalling it? That may fix a
component of any damaged installation that's causing this to fail.
