WLM + Remote Assistance + Linksys Routers

I've been having one heck of a time getting Remote Assistance working
between my sister and me. Both of us run Win XP SP2 and both of us have
Linksys Routers. Hers is a Wireless G, Mine is the WRT310N. While
talking her through her router settings, the menus appear to be
similar; making it easy for me to talk her through them. We both have
port 3389 enabled (TCP) which seems to be the common fix for this. It
still fails. The error I get when she asks for assistance is "Remote
Assistance connection could not be established because the
remote host name could not be resolved. Please try again". On a lark, I
requested assistance from her; she gets a different error "a remote
assistance connection could not be established because the DNS Name of
the remote computer could not be established".

Anyone else had these problems and have you successfully resolved them?
If so, please share - Thanks!

J

Did you update your Linksys router's firmware?

Greetings JP,

When you ask for a Remote Assistance invite, via UPnP, it maps a random port to port 3389 and
therefore just allowing 3389 in a lot of cases won't help. Besides following Jason's advice,
make sure that Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is enabled in the router for all this to happen
properly.

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you. The only reason I had forwarded port 3389 was because prior to
that, we (my sister and I) were getting those very same errors. Forwarding
the ports on both of our computers did absolutely nothing. I'll try the
firmware update. I know that UPnP is enabled on both of our routers. I'll
check back after the update.

Thanks!

John
