System: WinXP Version 2002 Pro SP3.
Computer: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
E6550 @ 2.33GHz - 1.87GHz. 0.99GB of RAM.

1.Microsoft Tools
2.Microsoft Office Word 2003
and
3.Microsoft Office Excel 2003.

I've got a Microsoft Office Suite 2007 CD but never installed it because the
spellchecker in Outlook Express6 worked only in the French language.

I just downloaded Windows Live Mail and like it a lot.

Is Windows Live Mail working in harmony with Microsoft Office Suite 2007 and
is the spellchecker working in the English language?

If so, what is the best way to uninstall Microsoft Office Professional
Edition 2003 (Size 171.00MB) ?
There is *no* 'Remove' button on Add or Remove Programs panel.

I also noticed that some (Office 2003) updates *can not* be removed from the
Add or Remove Programs panel. Please advise as how to handle these
particular updates.
Should I uninstall the (Office 2003) updates which *can* be removed?

Will my existing Microsoft Excel 2003 spreadsheets convert automatically to
Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheets?

Do I have to install Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system together
with Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 1 (SP!)?

Will the system automatically search for pertinent security updates?

Can I expect any problems (known issues)?
Or, would it be safer to leave 2003 installed and forget about the 2007
Edition?

This response deals with the Windows Live Mail aspect only.

Windows Live Mail includes its own spellcheck files so unlike Outlook
Express, it does not require Microsoft Office programs for spellcheck
capability. The installation of Office 2007 should not interfere with
WL Mail in any way.

However, English (US) is the default English spellchecker in WLMail. If
you prefer a different spellcheck version (UK, Canadian, Australian,
etc.), please return to this newsgroup for further instructions.

I understand the fix for that is to simply reinstall the Office 2003
Proofing tools, after installing Office 2007.

Yes, separate programs, separate spell checker and dictionaries. OL, if installed, will by design become the default email client
and attempt to do so, if changed from default, when OL updates are installed.

- Was this an OEM installed version ? Office 2003 retail by design when installed on W2K/XP provides an uninstall option via
Add-Remove.

Either way is fine...since the updates modify Office files, those files will be removed once office is removed. IIRC, and as a a
last resort, there is an Office 2003 removal tool in the Office 2003 Resource Kit

Excel 2007 has the ability to open, read, edit, save Excel 2003 spreadsheet(xls) files.
Excel 2007 by default saves files to its new extension and file format(*.xlsx).
One can change the default(Office Button/Excel Options/Save)to use the 03 format as default.

As long as Windows Update(WU) is configured properly. If your question is about Office updates, then WU has to be configured(In XP
to use MU instead or WU; in Vista MU is an option in the WU config panel). Alternately instead of MU, one can use the Office
Update on the Office Online Web site

Both function. 2007's has additonal features, a entirely different GUI, ..thus 2003 wrote skills will require some patience.

The WLM Spellchecker is one of its best features.

However in the future it should be upgraded to cover all words in the OED
[Oxford English Dictionary].

No, it's not am OEM installed version. I now suspect the Remove button is
not showing is because Office 2003 was installed only partially. I think
(hope) when installing Office 2003 in its entirety the Remove button will
show.

If you install only the proofing tools from Office XP or Office 2003 you
can't validate the installation. This results in the inability to download
anything from Microsoft since it won't pass the Genuine Advantage test. You
need to install something else that will trigger activation. However it
doesn't make sense to install something if you don't need it. :-)

If you install proofing tools from Office 2000 then you'll encounter a
conflict with SmartTags.

I didn't test the proofing tools from previous versions so they may work but
I suspect they'll have issues too.

Currently, Microsoft's recommendation is to install proofing tools from a
third party. Here's their KB article on this issue:
