WLM thinks I'm using a wired network connection

Hi,

Using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 (Build 8.5.1302.1018) on Windows Vista
Ultimate. When I check the "connection" tab in "options", WLM tells me:

"You are connected to the Internet through wired network connection".

This is not true! I am using a wireless connection to my Linksys WRT54G
router.

On 2 other PCs, running Windows XP, WLM correctly identifies my
connection as wireless. Why doesn't it do that under Vista?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Kind regards,
Mark Veldhuis.

Greetings Mark,

Yeah, I haven't actually seen this work on Vista either. I believe it's broken. It doesn't
change how Messenger behaves, so it's merely just bad information.

And like so many small things in Messenger, this was probably postponed till later.

Thanks for your reply.
I was having another problem with WLM, and I thought maybe it was
related somehow. Part of my contacts kept disappearing, and I could
only get them visible again by logging off and back on again. I Googled
a bit, and found a registry fix that apparently works. So far so good,
all contacts are still there. And it doesn't seem related to the bad
info about the connection type.

Kind regards,
Mark Veldhuis.

Hi Mark,

Great. May I ask what this registry fix was (link would be helpful)?

Hi Jonathan,

on 7/12/2007, Jonathan Kay [MVP] supposed :

I forget where I originally read it, but this describes what I did:

Since I deleted the registry key, my contact list has been 'stable'.
