Greetings Mickey,
Messenger uses some of the same interfaces as Internet Explorer, and if IE can't connect,
Messenger usually won't be able to either.
That said, it sounds like something is interfering with both. Deleting random files is
generally not the way to fix any of these sorts of problems. AGI seems to be AG Interactive
based software, which is installed with the American Greetings toolbar, among other software.
You may want to have a look through your Programs and Features in the Control Panel and
remove some of this software.
Additionally, you may want to verify you don't have any malware installed on your system,
using some like malware bytes:
