WMP 11 major problems

I have Vista Home Basic. Until last week my CDs, streaming internet radio,
etc worked fine.

This week, WMP opens, starts counting, but there is no sound. When playing
music that I have ripped from my own CDs, WMP shows an error saying the files
are unavailable. I deleted and re-added all of the files to WMP11 library,
but it still won't play any of them.

It seems that WMP11 has hijacked the multimedia functions on my computer.
It will not allow me to uninstall or replace WMP11 with a previous version.
Vista will also not allow me to change the default player for my multimedia.

Can you do a System Restore to earlier point in time before you started
experiencing this problem?

I second Andre's advice. You might also try running sfc /scannow in a
command prompt.

What is sfc /scannow and where can I find it?

Under Programs / Accessories right click on "Command Prompt" and select Run
as Administrator. Affirm the UAC prompt. Then in the command prompt window
type sfc /scannow It will take some time to run. It may possibly prompt at
some point to insert the Windows DVD. (If you don't have one, don't let it
deter you from trying. It's usually not needed.
This process checks your Windows system files for proper versions and will
try to fix any inconsistencies.

What you can also check are the advanced features of your sound
hardware:

- Right-Click the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of your
screen, then select Playback Devices.
- Click Speakers, then click Properties.
- Goto Enhancments and turn on the "Disable all sound effects"
option.
- Click OK, then OK again.Your audio sould work ok again without giving the "media is missing"
error (unless, of course, the media really IS missing).

Also try to download and install the latest non-BETA drivers for your
audio hardware.

I experienced this problem with my motherboard onboard sound, and used
the above to correct the problem. I've reported it to ASUS, so that
perhaps they could duplicate the error and fix their sound drivers.

Type cmd in the Start Search box above the Start Orb. When cmd.exe appears at
the top of the Start Menu, right click on in and select "Run as Administrator".
In the command window type: sfc /scannow.

SFC = System File Checker (can detect corrupted system files and attempt to
repair them).

When you get that error, click the Error Details button - what's the
specific *URL* it takes you to?

Vista easily lets you change default players for multimedia. Use the
Default Programs tools. =)

What changed between when this worked and when it didn't?
What are the results of WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu
tool?
