First, I am trying to watch a DVD through WMP12. I was able to watch several
DVD's, then *POOF*! All of a sudden, WMP12 gives me the typical error
message, with "search for a solution online" that goes nowhere. I have
searched for this particular issue and have had no success, aside from
viewing Zach D's site. I have generated an error report; the details are
below.

Please help! I have tried, through add remove programs, to turn off Windows
Media, rebooting, then re-enabling and re-rebooting several times to no avail.

Faulting application name: wmplayer.exe, version: 12.0.7600.16415, time
stamp: 0x4a98b600
Faulting module name: qdvd.dll, version: 6.6.7600.16385, time stamp:
0x4a5be02a
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000025019
Faulting process id: 0xf60
Faulting application start time: 0x01ca86c1db15969e
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\qdvd.dll

Thanks!

BW

The error msg is telling you the file location that is not working. If that
file is part of Windows system, you need to do a system repair from start up
to repair that file. If it didn't come with your computer, try running a full
scan of your computer prior to uninstall/reinstall of the player.

Try these steps without going online and check your firewall. If the scan
doesn't show anything or correct it, your firewall could be blocking the
program.

If it does show something that is effecting the file, it should remove the
problem and let you use it. Because the error msg says 'system32', it is a
WINDOWS system file associated to your version of Windows and not a file
associated directly to the player. (Go to "Help and Support" from your start
menu and look for your system's error msgs. If the error msg that says
'system32' is occuring when you are running other programs, you need to print
out that page)

If you are having other problems with your computer and don't have your data
backed up, you need to back up your data and get on-line as infrequently as
possible until you get that file fixed.

Unless you know exactly what you are doing, I wouldn't try fixing it from
the start up yourself. There is a section at the front page of this website
that lists Windows support numbers based on location, if running a scan and
resetting your firewall won't correct the problem. You don't need to have
your computer repaired but the system reset if that is the case and again,
will need to have your data backed up and all of your computer's disks for
them to help you reset the system.

The longer you run your computer with that kind of error msg, the slower it
will run until it stops running.

Hopefully, though, it can be fixed by running a full scan and removing
anything that is blocking that system file from working.

(if you don't know how to back up your data, the support #'s will help you
with that at the same time but always run a scan before a backup so you don't
backup the problem and end up re-installing it, which is why once you start
to work on it, you should not get on-line until it's fixed.)

It doesn't take that long and don't panic. It's repairable.

Take care.

Did you use the Check for Solutions option? That'll typically give you a
fault bucket ID, which might be useful here.

Failing that, posting the crash DMP file that you get when this happens
might help. =\
