WMSR (KB890830) hangs during install: error 0x800706BE

My computer is set on automatic updates, with the option to intall once they
have downloaded. I am running xp pro, sp2, all updates are current.

When I clicked to install the most recent updates, the first update
installed, but the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2005
(KB890830) hangs. When I view installation history under the windows update
site, under the status box there is a red x with the following error #:
0x800706BE.

I have also tried to run mrt.exe from the command line as well as downloaded
the tool from the following site, but the tool still hangs around 40%:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.

I have also disabled my firewall (zone alarm) and virus software (mcafee),
but the tool still won't work properly.

However, when I run the tool from the IE interface (with zone alarm and
mcafee enabled) it works fine, showing no malicious software present on my
computer: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I too have the same problem. Left running for hours with only about 20% on
progress bar. Tried redownloading but no joy. Gave up in despair. Never
had a problem with previous updates for this item.

I have also had this problem applying the Nov 2005 MSRT.

I have never had any issues before.

I am running Windows XP Pro.

I take some heart from the fact that a number of people have the same
problem but do not yet see a way of recitifying it or whether or not I should
be worried?
