[error number: 0x80072EE4] not even microsoft seems to reconize this one as
valid error. Still I went through as many fixes as my 56k modem would allow
me in the whole of 8 hours now and I have given up. Please please let me
know of the correct fix. I have through all the quick fixes to the more
complex ones and to no avail. I am missing something. thanks

Make sure your Firewall isn't blocking access to Windows Update. Check your Firewall settings.

No updates available:-

Register the following system files
Click Start > Run
Type: net.exe stop wuauserv
Press OK
Repeat the above steps for the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Try the WU site again.

Also this worked for one user:
Go to Tools->Internet Option->Advanced tab Scroll down to security Section and unselected the
following option

"Check for publisher's certificate revocation"
"Check for server certificate revocation"

Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Windows Update scan feature reaches 100%, and then displays "There are no updates available at this
time" message.
The log file contains error 0x800c0008 or 0x80072EE4.
Windows 2000 & Windows XP

You're not alone. They did 43 pages of fixes and I still cannot install a
new printer
install updates or install Norton Internet security. i also cannot get
updates on
Norton Anti-virus 2005 which i have installed but hope to replace with
internet
security. i have Windows XP Home Edition. It came on my computer, with no
discs
to back up. This is ridiculous. How does Microsoft stay in business with
such a
sloppy system? i have a HP computer and the printer is HP but Microsoft does
not recognize it.

pretty ****ed off as I have been trying to rectify this issue for days and
have spent hours on microsoft web site and I am about to toss this computer
out the window!

Check your proxy settings even if you're not behind a proxy server.
How the Windows Update client determines which proxy server to use to connect to the Windows Update
