Hi, My Windows XP professionnal automatically updated 3 nights ago, it
installed I don't know what update, but since then, my computer wont reboot
correctly. It stops and freeze with the introduction winXP logo with black
background (the one with the little blue bar going from left to right. The
blue bar will go ok for 4 cycle and then freeze and then the whole computer
freeze.

I have tried to reboot in safe mode, ok
I have tried to restore to an earlier date when the computer was ok, no
changes
I tried Adaware, Stinger, AVG, didnt find anything
I try to scan my disk, didnt find anything

Anyone has an idea of what i can do?

Thanks

Hello, Louis. It's strange that you say that because my computer did the
exact same thing. It was updating itself a few nights ago and I haven't been
able to log on the regular way since then. Then, it goes through the same
process as yours did. I have to log on through safe mode in order to get on
the computer.

If you find anything, please send me information as to what it is and how I
can fix it.
Thanks!

Hi;

Sometimes this can be caused by a corruption of the graphics drivers. I'd
recommend you download the latest drivers from the OEM website (ATI, Nvidia,
etc.) and then boot into Safe Mode, install that updated driver, and then
attempt to boot into Normal Mode again.

Also, boot into the CMOS Setup section, verify your hard drive(s) are still
recognized correctly, then Save-and-Exit to force a rewrite of the Setup
configuration. Truthfully, the real reason to do this is that the CMOS will
run an Auto scan of the hardware and repair any setting that may have been
misaligned due to a power fluctuation or similar event.

If that doesn't solve the problem, the best bet (without further info) would
be to boot from the Windows XP CD and then do a Repair install. This is
typically safe and no user files are lost. I've done many of these on XP
systems. If you have never done one before, here's a short checklist on the
steps involved:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;315341 (see Method
2). Note you will have to re-install SP-2 as well, then several updates
from the Microsoft Update website.

I thank you so much, but truthfully I'm not computer savvy, so I have no idea
on how to do those things you listed below. I guess I'd have to put in
the XP disc, but I don't know that I have one because it came with the
computer. Is there a certain disc I'm to put into the computer that came with
it? If so, I really don't want to lose files that are onthe hard drive.
What's my best "bestest" bet?

Again, thank you!

Thanks for the tips,

I just tried to reinstall my graphic card driver (3Dlabs Wildcat 5110)
without any changes, I will test the cmos option now.

As for reinstallating and repairing, i would better like not to go through
this as I dont really want to go through all the updates installation, what
other info could be usefull for u to know?

I run XP SP2 with all updates
It is a Dell Pentium4 Xeon Dual 1.7
2Gig Ram
2 36Gig SCSI hard drive
3DLabs Wildacat 5110 card

Only changes since begining of problems are updates
B914388
B916595
B17159

It seems that I cant remove them using the methods propose in an earlier
topic on how to manually remove updates as i dont see an .exe file in the
spuninst folder(maybe cause i am in safe mode?)

Thanks again...

Hi Jernigan,
My Laptop came with XP loaded also, I call Gateway and they sent me one, and
had it in my hands 2 days later.
I have extended warranty tho on both of my pc's.

You will need to set your system to allow you to view system and hidden
files/folders. Open Control Panel, then Folder Options. On the View tab
select the following:

"Display the contents of system folders"
"Show hidden files and folders"

UN-check the option to "Hide protected operating system files"

Close that applet and Control Panel. That should allow you to see the
"SPuninst" folder, and the .exe file within it.

Hi;

The first suggestion (re-install your graphic driver) should be your first
step. While logged in via Safe Mode, open Control Panel and then Display.
Click the Settings tab.

That should show you the name of the monitor and the name/model of the
graphics card you have installed. Write that info down, especially the full
name of the graphics card. Now go to the website for the original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) that makes your graphics card. If it isn't clear from
the displayed name, post back with the full name or use Google to find the
OEM by entering the full name of the graphics card and searching for the
"support" website. On that website you will find a Support section that has
drivers you can download to your computer and then install. Run the .exe
you downloaded in Safe Mode, then try to reboot back into Normal mode.

I had the same problem this morning and posted a question about this just
about a half hour ago. I then searched and found the most recent updates and
deleted them, then rebooted and everything is back to normal. The files I
deleted with uncertainty (im definitely no guru, but took a chance) were
"msft" and "vctrl". Hope this can help someone out there. If anyone can offer
more insight to what I've done, please feel free as I was just winging it and
got lucky. I do know that these were security updates.
