It won't validate my XP for updates

I have a totally legitimate OEM XP disk. I just reinstalled, after
reformatting my c: drive. I need to update to service pack 2. It told me to
verify, which I did, and it seemed to accept the verification. I went back
to trying to upgrade, and it indicates that my disk is not legitimate.

Sorry, forget it. I thought it had registered my XP, but it hadn't. Now
working fine.

"I installed it twice" might be the problem. Your license is for a single
installation only.

What Robin said is certainly valid, but on the same computer? And you *are*
allowed to have a backup copy on your personal laptop - or at least you were
two years ago. Don't know why that should have changed. Also, I didn't get
an error code, it just kept telling me that it wasn't verified.

I'm betting that the issue is the same that mine was - it has to be
registered. But once you have done that once, I don't know how you'd get the
screen for it back. There might be a phone number for registering - there
used to be - and they might know how to get there.

One license one computer the same as it has been since at least Windows 95.
What you thought was correct 2 years ago was incorrect then as it is now.
You can not install retail Windows XP on a laptop and Desktop or even any 2
computers at the same time.

However some retail versions of Office allow more than one installation and
what you thought sounds like an Office feature.
Read your EULA for details.

I just had my computer worked on. It needed a new power supply and a new
motherboard. The person that fixed it installed windows xp professional, I
have no idea what the validation code is for it. Please don't tell me I need
to spend more money to get up and running. I could have bought a new computer
for all of the money I just spent.

You need to have a serious discussion with the person who installed Windows
XP on your PC. Either it is legitimate, in which case you should be in
possession of the CD key for registration, or it is legitimate, in which
case that person owes you an operating system.

Robin;
I think you meant:
"...or it is illegitimate, in which case that person owes you an operating
system."
