Ok people listen up. This may or may not help...hope it does. There is a
Automated system recovery wizard on xp professional that is suppose to help
get xp up and running again in such cases, but i dont know if this recovery
system wizard is on just xp professional or home edition so you will have to
look cause my son is having the same problem with his computer. Follow these
instructions to the T. First beings that you can't use your own computer
cause it constantly restarts itself or not start at all, you need to find
another computer that is working.....maybe a friends computer that has a
working version of xp home edition or professional (preferably xp
professional) and pray that he or she didn't update to service pack 2 yet
cause I dont know if this will work after service pack 2 has been installed,
and everybody has a friend and if you dont have a friend try using best buys
or circuit city computers.....some of there computers are up and running the
desktop so you would have access....sencond your going to need a floppy disk
to do this. Now once you find a working computer and it is up and running,
click on START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEMS TOOLS, BACKUP.....if you
see the backup or restore wizard, click ADVANCED MODE(written in blue
letters and underlined)....this will take you to another screen which will
have three buttons on it....one of the buttons will say AUTOMATED SYSTEM
RECOVERY WIZARD...click on this one and follow the prompts to make a backup
of your system files. Note: that this process backsup ONLY the registry and
other files that are critical to start Windows xp startup so thats why I said
it doesnt matter what computer you do this from. When the back up is
finished, you'll be prompted to insert a blank floppy disk in the drive.
When the wizard is done with the disk, take that disk to the computer that
your having the problem with and put the floppy with the backup files on it
into the floppy drive (with the power off) then start the computer back up
and it will boot from the floppy and hopefully it will start your computer
back up and running again. If all this works (cause I have never done this
before mind you) and the computer is running, pull the floppy back out and
save it for future use and make sure you lable the floppy so you know what it
is. Now....once you have that done and your back to the desktop...click
START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, SYSTEM RESTORE and follow the
on screen prompts....in other words try to restore the computers system files
and resgistry files to the date before you installed service pack 2 or go a
week back prior to the installation of service pack 2 so you know you have a
good system recovery. Once again....if all this works and you get your
computer up and running don't resintall service pack 2 until you find out why
your computer wont except service pack 2 correctly. This process should work
for anybody having problems with there computer when it comes to service pack
2. Hope this helps. Richard.
