I have Word 2002 on my old Windows XP system and would like to keep using it
on my new Vista System which has MS Works 8, without a MSWord component. I
migrated the Word 2002 folder from the old system to the new one but cannot
launch it. Is there a solution? Must I buy Word 2007? If so, Word Perfect
beckons.

Did your old system come with the install cd for Word 2002? If you purchased
Word as part of Microsoft Works Suite, you should be able to install from
one the cds or DVD. Word 2002 is compatible with Vista, but you can't just
move the application folder over to Vista and expect it to work since there
are registry entries that are needed and additional application components
spread across the system on XP.

If you have the CD, just install it on Vista and install the latest Service
Pack 3 for Word 2002.

Another option would be a free download of OpenOffice.org. It handles all
the MS formats, WP formats as well as non-proprietary ones.

You can't migrate a folder and have it run, the Word program needs to be
reinstalled from the original media. If it's an OEM version that came
preinstalled on the original computer then by it's license you might not be
allowed to move it to a new computer.

For what it's worth I am using WordPerfect version 12 in Vista and will be
going to WP X13 soon. I prefer WP.

No, of course not. That technique would not have created the dozens of
necessary registry entries or placed the many other essential files in
Vista's systems folders. Sopisticated applications such as Word can't be
"migrated" simply by copying a single folder; you'll need to install it from
the original installation CD.

Install Word using the original installation CD.

Only if you want to do so. Word 2002 will work just fine, once properly
installed.

Or install the free openoffice at openoffice.org.
It'll open your existing Word docs.

Word 2002/XP runs fine in VISTA but you have to install it.

If you do not have the installation media, and all you want is WORD,
have a look at WORKS SUITE 2006 (seems to be the current version) at:

http://www.microsoft.com/products/wo...s.aspx?pid=001

since it contains WORD 2002 plus a lot of other useful stuff eg Streets
& Trips and so on.

The Works part of it is WORKS 8 in the description but my "About" says
8.5 which is the current version.

Amazon have it for $90 with free shipping so tht compares well with
buying WORD on its own.
