I was trying to create a new Windows Live ID today, but it kept rejecting the
ID that i wanted. So i added a few random characters at the end hoping that
would do it.But it wasn't until i removed the letter "N" off of "American"
that it was accepted.I also emailed the ID to see if it was taken only to get
an email failure. The name i choose started with the word American.I tried
different variations that i'm 100% sure that NO ONE else could possible
have.If you think i'm mistake,try for yourself.Create a new user profile
@live or@hotmail,then try and use the word American within the ID.After your
rejected,a help window will pop up trying to assist you with ideas, this help
window will not help you find any variation of the words "America" or
"American".Does this bother anyone else?Whats the Deal Microsoft???

Eh? I just created a Windows Live ID with the word, "american" in it. Just
awaiting the emailed instructions to set things up. Granted, it is not a
Hotmail account, though; I set it up using a disposable Yahoo! email
address. But it has a distinct string component which is, "american".

<yamaniakikaze->

I supposed it could be a limitation on a Hotmail account, as contrasted with
a Windows Live ID.

Thanks N.miller for the reply and taking the time to try for yourself.I've
been on here for hours trying to make sure. But i've just learned they DO in
fact RESTRICT the use of the word "American". 1. Go to the Windows Live ID
homepage. 2. click "sign up". 3. select "No, sign me up for a free MSN
Hotmail e-mail address". Then type the word "American" and click "check
availability".Sadly you'll get this message "The e-mail address contains a
word or phrase that is not allowed. Please type another e-mail address". At
this point i'm just bringing it to everyones attention.Ill save the rest for
my Blog.. Thanks N.miller and to all who care...

Greetings,

Interesting - I do wonder why this in particular would be blocked.

It's curious, but I can understand the concern. For example, I could
create userids such as American_Citizen or American_Taxpayer, one of
which is misleading.

On the other hand, perhaps it's just a trademark. :-)

Scary. Perhaps they need a verification process to validate ones American
status

I assume it's the latter option which is not valid for you

Windows Live ID allowed me to set up an account with the word "American" in
the email address. I have not tried to sign up an Hotmail account. My money
is on Hotmail imposing the restriction for their email services.

Hi,

There are distinct differences between the two registration systems (Hotmail
accounts are "special" Live IDs), so this isn't too unexpected really.

Still weird though

after reading the replies i noticed i left out the link (seeing there are
different avenues to create your windows live id)
https://signup.live.com/signup.aspx?...ollrs=12&lic=1
this is where the suggestion box will pop up. error on my part (i cant
stand multi-posting) so sorry everyone after you click the link, instead of
using your own email, click the link that says"Or get a Windows Live e-mail
address" type american then click "check availability" you'll get
rejected, then click again to see the suggestion box, then type JUST the word
american....then read its reply...(click twice to make sure) when the reply
says "try using different words" and the only word i typed was american.this
is intentional.i thought well mabey microsoft is preventing ANYONE from
creating accounts with ANY form of national association.Nope. type any other
nationality and you'll get your new email addy.i could accept that a little
easier, but apparently its exclusive.sorry for all the confusion everyone.but
this seems to be a fact.this might not seem like much to some, but its does
give some insight into the services we use and or depend on daily.i guess the
lesson would be for microsoft.and that would be "don't forget where you came
from"please post if you get the same results
thanks in advance
