I've done something to what was originally a word document transferred from
Windows XP to Vista. Instead of normal text it is now a jumble of letters
and symbols and won't open with word pad or word viewer. Can I possibly
salvage it? Any help would be appreciated.

What is the current name? Does it end in "DOC"

Was only one file a problem?

Look at the beggining of the file using a text viewer or hex editor.
This is the header and normally tells you what the document belongs to.
Or post it here. Is an example a JPEG file will say something like,
"uf w jpeg 6 photoshop ejfew ds"
This is just an example but I hope it gives you the idea.
The reason why it is a jumble of letters is because it is not coded in
ascii but the programs own code, this can include fonts, sizing and
other attributes.

What is the version of Word that you are using?
Did you also change from Office 2003 (or previous)? A Word 2007 document
(with extension .docx) will not open in Office 2003 without a free addon to
Word 2003 from Microsoft.

Answer the following questions, please:

1. What version of Word created it?

2. What is its filename extension?

3. Exactly how did you transfer it?

4. Can you transfer it back to the Windows XP computer? Can it read by
Word there?

I had Windows Xp version 2002 on my old computer. I used the vista transfer
cable to move everything over to my new computer with Vista.

I opened this particular document but it had become read only and it was in
trying to change that that I ended up in this mess. I now get rows of YYYYs
and other random letters. I've tried opening it with Word Viewer, notepad
and wordpad. I even reloaded my original Windows 97 Word. I've, as
suggested, now downloaded Word 2003 RTF version 1.8. Still nothing.

When I search for it the little symbol by its title is for Word Viewer (i.e.
no longer Word as it was on my old computer.) The location is given as
C:\users.......\genealogy and it says its a doc. Someone asked for the
filename extension but how do I fix that?
