Good point! It seems that all of Microsoft's email programs can be hampered by third party security programs. Switching to the
more compatible Microsoft Security Essentials will cure that type of problem.

I know its a long shot, but I had a similar problem recently with Outlook
and it turned out to be related to my anti-virus. I was using combo
anti-virus. Whilst it wasn't flagging anything up it was stopping it from
working. Having uninstalled it and replaced it with Microsoft Security
Essentials the problem went away and I could again open attachments which
I'd previously not had an issue with. So if she is using Comodo then it
might be worth trying an alternative.
