When I have a document open in Word there appears to be a process
executing constantly. Task manager tells me it is WINWORD.EXE. What is
causing this apparent proceesing loop? It adversely affects typing or
editting the document with a constant lag in keystrokes.

it's word and it's telling you, windows word is active, perfectly normal.
lagging keystrokes are usually caused by some piece of software taking up a
large amount of processing time, ie antivirus usually Norton.
