WordPad versus Notepad

More on that screwup causing Notepad to only be able to be used when it is maximized: no matter how I open Notepad.exe, it doesn't function as it used to. Making WordPad.exe the default application for all .txt files gives me the same functionality, but I do miss my Notepad!

Any pointers or ideas of how to recover from whatever is causing Notepad.exe to function improperly on this Windows Vista Ultimate?

This happened simultaneously with the last Windows Update I was able to run. Running an "SFC /scannow" does not run properly!

Help!

Ross

Mine works ok. Opens in a small window

Did you check on the properties for notepad.exe to see if it set to run in
normal mode. Maybe its set to run maximized

Mine is set to run a normal window. However, when it opens although the menu is useful the window cannot be moved except when the window is maximized; until then the red X is not visible.

Hi, Ross.

Sounds like you might have adjusted the window size so large, and/or moved
it so far UP, that the red X is not visible in that "restored" size. But
Maximized brings it back within the monitor's size limits.

You MAY be able to drag the window down by shoving your mouse to the very
top of the screen and grabbing the very slim edge of the Title Bar and
dragging it down a little.

Or you can right-click WordPad's icon on your Taskbar and use your keyboard
arrows to Move or Size the window back into a manageable configuration.

Remember that Maximized is not the same as Full Screen, which is not the
same as a Normal window resized to fit the whole screen.

Ross,

Try removing the "Notepad" key from the Windows Registry and see if that
corrects the issue.

1. Make sure that Notepad.exe is closed.
2. Click on Start.
3. In the "Start Search" field type REGEDIT.EXE and then press Enter.
4. If User Account Control prompts you for consent, click on Allow or
provide the appropriate credentials.
5. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Notepad.
6. Right click on the "Notepad" key on the left hand side of the Registry
Editor and click on Delete.
7. Re-open Notepad.

Let me know how this works for you, have a great day,

This is not a solution, as I don't know what is happening with your Notepad,
but I thought you might want to use EditPad Lite instead, as it is much
better. It's free.
