Working crash

I recently purchased the following system:

Gateway FX541S
(Although I was not told ahead of time, I believe the unit may be a
rebranded Acer)
Intel Core2 Quad
Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz
3 gig Ram
32 Bit system
NVidia 8600GT video card
Windows Vista Home Premium

This is my first experience with Vista and overall I really dont have a
problem with the OS. But I do have a couple major glitches.

I can be working with an open window (it doesn't seem to be any specific
program), click a button and the screen I am working on goes grey making the
window no longer accessible. I get the little swirl where my pointer used to
be showing the item is working and sometimes I get the (Not Responding)
message after the title at the top of the window. I also sometimes get an
error saying the program has a problem and Windows is searching for a
solution. The solution is never found. Sometimes I can close the window but
usually it crashes the comp and I have to restart.
Has anyone heard of this problem before?
Thanks...gary

New? or Refurbished?

If it was a display model, format it and do a clean install. If it's new and
fresh out of the box, then contact Gateway immediately as you likely have
faulty hardware and should be using your warranty. No new machine should act
like this.

Hi Rick,
The machine straight out of the box had a problem. Aparently a bad sector on
the hard drive. I used Spin Rite to fix it, then formatted the drive, did a
fresh install.
It had run ok until these two problems came up. I hate to ship the thing
back, the tower itself weighs about 50 lbs....gary

Your choice. Bad hardware does not get better, only worse.

I was really trying to determine if it was a Vista problem or with the
hardware. I talked to a Gateway tech today. It was requested that I restore
the computer again, no other suggestions and no troubleshooting performed.
2nd time for a restore since Januay 1. If that does not fix. I have to ship
this 1 month old Gateway(they finally admitted it was an Acer Comp, seems
they have merged) back to Gateway. Wait 10 to 15 days before they ship it
back.
Should have bought Dell, even their subpar support was better than this.
Thanks for the help....gary
