working HDD not showing up

I recently bought a new PC. Vista came preinstalled. I pulled my data HDD out
of my old windows 2000 box. It's formatted as either ntfs or fat32, I forget
which.

Anyway, my BIOS sees the drive, as does Vista. Sort of. The drive and its
partition show up in Disk Management, but upon right clicking on the
partition am only given the 'Help' option. Nothing else shows up. Vista also
seems to have not assigned a volume name or letter to the drive.

Disk Management doesn't see a file system on the disk, even though the
'Status' is listed as Healthy.

Anyone have any thoughts or need more information?

Go into Device Manager and assign a drive letter to the drive.

Hi,

A couple of things to check:

- How does disk manager (diskmgmt.msc) report the space on the drive? Tried
importing it?
- Is the jumper set correctly?
- Was the drive originally set up with drive overlay software?

This latter one may be a problem, as it may require use of similar to regain
access to it without destroying data.

My question would also be did you set the HD jumper to slave.

Did you go into the Bios settings to make sure your drive is recognized?

I don't see a way to assign either the drive I'm having issues with, nor the
drive that came with the computer, a drive letter via the device manager.

Device Manager can in no way assign drive letters. Control Panel >
Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management is used to manage
disks and drive letter assignment.

Disk Management reports the following (assuming I'm looking at the right
screen):

Layout:
Simple

Type:
Basic

File System:
(is blank)

Status:
Healthy (EISA Configuation).

Also:

Jumpers have been configured for both cable select and master/slave. Same
problem in both configurations.

I don't recall if the drive was set up using any overlay software... But if
memory serves, I swapped it into one of my xp machines and formatted it (I
think I was having issues getting 2k to do it).

I've tried running the drive in both cable select and master/slave
configurations. No luck.

I did mention that the BIOS does see my drive (as does vista, I just can't
access it). At this point, I still do.

So when you click on My Computer your drive is listed, but when you double
click the drive what happens?

No, the drive does not show up in My Computer.

It does show up in the Device Manager, Disk Management.

It does show up in System Information -> Components -> Storage -> Disks.

It does not show up in System Information -> Components -> Storage -> Drives.
