worm in messanger

hello today we got a worm in messanger and i cant get the avast program to
stop telling me as when we open messanger it comes on and closes the page
before you can get to your emails avast detected the virus but i cant do
anything with messanger

What is "messanger"?

Do you mean "MSN Messenger"? If so - what version?
What version of Avast?

You should likely uninstall "messanger" (Control Panel --> Add or Remove
Programs) and then do a full scan with Avast! and then reboot and reinstall
"messanger".
