MS fan here.
Absolutely LOVE Vista.
But I am a bit annoyed by how such a huge and supposedly 'in touch' company
can continue to do not-so smart things.
I ran 'Windows Update" last night on Vista. Something updated. Asked if I
wanted to reboot., "Later" i told it. Since I did an UPGRADE and not a full
install... on a whim I thought I would try Battlefield2. Surprise surprise,
it worked!
However every 12 minutes, BF2 minimized to the task bar "updates installed!
Reboot?" "later" 12 minutes later...

Come on guys! At least make it an HOURLY reminder...

I still don't understand when people complain in this way...

You even stated you manually did the update. You know it might want to
reboot. You knew it might change some core component that might crash since
some other component that needed to be updated but couldn't until the reboot
hadn't been updated. You knew all this when you went and manually said,
"Hey - update my computer please..."

You aren't even using automatic update - which is smart for someone who
wants more control over there machine. Perfect.

But when you manually tell it to update - don't do it until you are ready to
go through with it all the way. You cannot pull your car through one of
those long conveyer car washes and when you get to the blow drying part -
decide you want to hang out there for a while. You started through the
car-wash - you knew pretty much what to expect - now go the rest of the way.

lol
Nice reply.
I DO, indeed, have auto update enabled. And last night I ran it again. It
found drivers for the 2 pieces of hardware I was missing and a new Vista
update. This time it DID ask me "Would you like to reboot now, remind you in
10 minutes, remind you in 1 hour"....

?!?!?!?!

Apparently my suggestion has already been implemented?!?!

You used microsoft drivers for 2 pieces of hardware - I hope those two bits
are made by microsoft. The drivers could be years old.
As you love this betaware so much, I am surprised you did not post your
thread in the vista groups.
If you find the time, please learn to post properly, thank you.
I would seek the vista groups out - just in case - it is betaware :-)

No the hardware was not made by Microsoft. The Updates were from Microsoft
FOR Vista. You telling me I shouldn't trust them? Example: one was for the
AC97 Codec (onboard sound) - WHQL CERTIFIED. So MS might give me OLD drivers
for Vista? Doubt it. In either case, everything works fine.
I know how to post, thanks. Is this NOT the WINDOWS UPDATE section FOR
Vista? The header pane of the page I am looking at says WINDOWS VISTA/HELP
AND SUPPORT BETA... The left pane says WINDOWS VISTA NEWSGROUPS. The selected
newsgroup says WINDOWS VISTA NEWSGROUP HOME.
How is this the wrong place? Please explain.
Why is everyone so crabby on this site?!?

I would not trust anything associated with betaware from MS or any other
manufacturer. I value the use of my one and only computer.
I am not a beta tester - I do not have a testing machine.
Whether or not the update drivers are only obtainable from MS
I would not know.

As far as I know it is not.

It is suggested that an issue such as yours is posted in the Vista General
newsgroups at this link
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgro...ral&sloc=en-us
Another good group, so I believe is the
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices.
Because you are using that ghastly/slow/outdated/error prone, web interface,
it not unusual for posts in that web interface to come into the newsgroups.
Why, I do not know. But that is why I and others do not use the web
interface at all.
Why not start using a newsreader?
The matter regarding the update of drivers for AC97 has drifted into here
before and posters have been pointed to the above link.
> Why is everyone so crabby on this site?!?

Never noticed it ;-)
Glad your problems is sorted though.
