I removed K896688 and it has solved a number of problems.
Question is what is happening and how this effects security as the update is
a compilation of a number of updates.

Install KB896688 again and see if the following fixes your problems:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

Bye,
Freudi

I reinstalled with the idea of using the reg edit but found every worked fine
without the reg edit. There were windows updates made between my uninstall
and the reinstall. I wonder of the new updates fixed something?

Any way I don't have problens now.

Do anyone from MS updates group view these discussions?

I am having similar problems, but mine is of a different error message. I am
running Windows XP home and when i try to run the updates i am getting this
message
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us

and i don't know how to resolve it at all. I have looked through the FAQ
section, but that particular error is never displayed. I think that it is
even causing me trouble with my office updates, becasue when i tried to
update my Outlook it didn't work either. Thanks for any help.

You did have your AV scanner disabled this time?

Nothing new at all.
