WS 2008 on Proliant ML350 G5

Good morning to you, good evening to us here!

Maybe this post belongs in a HP group, but I feel it could be good topic for
WS as well ?
Charlie or anybody got a Proliant ML350 G5 ?

Questions:
- Anybody else had trouble installing WS 2008 on Proliant ML350 G5 ?
- Have you added the Proliant Support Pack (PSP) for WS 2008 from HP as
recommended by HP, and if, did it affect the WS 2008, did it add something
useful ?
- When installing SBS 2008 (soon) in a Hyper-V VM, should it be installed
directly, booting from the WS 2008 standard CD or by running HP SmartStart
first ?

Background info:
Just started step by step testing of Windows Server 2008 on my Proliant
ML350 G5. Only role is Hyper-V. Have installed a second WS 2008 in a VM.
Plan to run this as TS. Next step will be to install SBS2008 as a second VM.
So far, the installation is plain, i.e. no extra drivers, updates or
anything. Everything looks really good and stable a this point. Some IO
units has wrong names but works fine. Will soon add all updates from MS. The
big question is whether to install drivers and stuff from HP. I am
hesitating because the HP recommended installation procedure (using HP
SmartStart) absolutely did not work for WS 2008, but worked fine for SBS
2008. I could find a number of people on Internet who had the same problem,
but found no "right" solution. I got it installed by first cleaning the HDD
boot track and also turning off the virtual install disk in BIOS (which
turns itself back on if I make a new install or reinstall). Stuff like that
make me real nervous, and I also hate to fix things that are not broken...
Therefore the questions.

Hope to getsome good advice on this.
Regards grandpa

Hello grandpa,

You should better post this to a HP newsgroup, the questions belong more
to hardware and the use of smartstart then to windows. We also use HP servers
since G2 versions and install the support packs and depending on the needs
we use more or less the features of it.

Basically you can install any server without them and also without installing
smartstart. Personally i like the smartstart, especially for preparing the
RAID configuration and also later on if need to add additional disks or a
MSA.

I run some 2008 VM's (VS2005 not hyper-v) on an old DL580 G2 server with
2 1,5GHz procs and 2GB RAM and installed them properly without smartstart.
Also i am not sure if smartstart is supported in VM's, because you have to
use the Hyper-V Integration Services. So based on the hardware with G5 servers
it should run on your machine as well. The G5 versions are really good machines,
we use them with 2003 for different roles/applications.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

Thanks a lot Meinolf !

I also feel this post belong in a HP group, but I did not find any that
looked useful and active. Suggestions?

You help me feel I'm on the right track. I definately use the SmartStart for
raid configuration and diagnostics checking. I plan NOT to use it for
installing SBS/WS in Hyper-V VMs. Have the feeling it could cause problems
because it HP SS seems directly HW oriented. Nor will I install the PSP in a
VM until I get som specific reasons to do it. I would like to use SmartStart
for installing parent OSs, but I can't get it to install WS 2008 (like many
others).

More comments are certainly welcome.

Not at all, setup was straight-forward. The only drivers I installed were
LAN and graphics.

I also installed HP Array Configuration Utility after the Windows setup.

No, I did not.

For VM installation, I booted directly from the W2K8 DVD.
