WSUS 3.1 sudden error

My wsus 3.1 had been working for many months, and suddenly when I attempted
login it gave me a connection error
'The wsus administration console was unable to connect to the wsus server
via remote api
The suggestion to clear interact with desktop in www publishing service was
nul as it is cleared.

Anything short of reinstalling??
