WSUS causes creation of new local user profile? (Re-post)

Migrated to WSUS on the same server as SUS. WSUS updates over 2000 W2Ksp4 +
about 50 XP workstations. It's an NT4 domain, in process of cleaning up DNS
in order to migrate to AD (we have 2 DNS zones, with almost all machines
using the new, simplified suffix, doc.nycnet). Since WSUS went online, when
patches are approved for install, about 2 or 3% of the workstations get hit
with the following problem:

After the reboot, when the user logs in, the existing local profile is
ignored and a new local profile with Default User settings is created. This
profile usually picks up part of the new domain suffix name (i.e,
JSmith.doc). We've had to go through changes to re-instate the good profile
folder.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know the cause or have the
fix? Thanks in advance.

Not sure what you mean. WSUS is on a W2K Adv. Server, the clients are W2K,
some XP, with a group policy pointing them to the server and imposing the
updates within 1 minute of login. On the client side, the AU and BITS
services are involved with installing the updates. Does that help any?

Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. invader@nospamforme.com Windows Vista General Discussion 1 11-01-2007 05:25 PM
