WSUS clients dont't see new updates

I have set up WSUS 3 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 R2. Same server is also
running ForFront. I can see available updates which are approved for each
client from the GUI on the WSUS server, but they will not be installed. If I
try wuauclt /a /detectnow on the clients, the logfile will show me that no
updates are available. Clients are running Windows Server 2008 and Vista
(both in 64 bit). Most of the updates which has not been installed is for
forefront (+ some office uppdates).

A couple of notes to start with:

The /a parameter is invalid. The command you want is simply wuauclt
/detectnow

This could be happening for any one (or more) of a half dozen major reasons.
The actual log entries will be necessary in order to make any further
determination.

Pick one specific example for analysis.

1. Pick a computer that you believe should be getting the update(s).
2. Identify one such update by complete title.
3. List *all* of the groups this update is approved for.
4. List *all* of the groups that this computer is listed as a member of on
the WSUS console.
5. Identify whether you are using server-based targeting or policy-based
targeting, and the exact steps you've taken to implement that feature.

Post all of the answers to 1 through 5.

Perform the following procedure on the computer selected in step #1:
1. Record the system time of the computer.
2. Restart the Automatic Updates service (net stop/start wuauserv).
3. Run this command: wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
4. Wait 30 minutes.
5. Post all of the log entries (unedited) from the WindowsUpdate.log
starting at the time recorded in Step #1.

2: First update in list of 10 is Update for Microsoft Forefront Client
Security (KB938054)
8 out of them is related to forefront the two last is Office SP2, which
is not installed
and Vista SP2. which is allready installed.
3: Is approved for All Computers and Unassigned Computers.(This is a small
test environment)
4: Same as 3:
5: As far as I can understand I use Policy based targeting. Have made a
separate GPO for WSUS and specified
WSUS server etc. Looks like WSUS works for other stuff

Actually, if you take only the log entries from the System Time recorded in
Step #1, which would be immediately before the Service Restart in Step #2,
and the following 30 minutes of entries, the log should be no more than a
couple hundred lines which will *easily* fit into a post in this newsgroup.

You're not the first who's been asked to do that procedure to get a
diagnostic log, you might not even be the 20th at this point; but you are
the first to suggest it was too big to post. :-)

Unless the detection *IS* working, and you've got several dozen updates
detected and downloading, I'm challenged to envision a "WUAgent not working"
scenario that would cause more than a couple hundred lines.

First thing I note that is that this system appears to have no knowledge of
an assigned target group. This would definitely make it difficult to see new
assigned updates, since the machine is only scanning against updates
approved for the "Unassigned Computers" group. The machine is, in fact,
detecting =zero= updates available for installation.

The Forefront scan, however, did find the Forefront signature update, so
that tells me there's nothing at all wrong with the core functionality of
the WUAgent or the WSUS Server -- the problem is almost certainly in the
configuration of the environment as relates to finding non-Forefront updates
from the WSUS Server.

Altogether... the =Forefront Client= scan found 99 updates.. it says.

Nonetheless, despite all the unneeded Forefront activity (which, did, though
provide useful infomation), it does appear as if this machine is lacking
proper group assignments.

If you're using server-side targeting, then ensure that the "Enable
client-side targeting" policy is disabled, and that the computer has been
properly moved from "Unassigned Computers" to the desired target group.

If you're using policy-based targeting, then ensure that the policy is
correctly configured, that "Enable client-side targeting" is enabled, that
the group defined in the policy actually exists on the WSUS server. Ensure
that the policy is being applied to the client; verify that the WSUS
registry key (HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsU pdate)
contains the correct values for TargetGroupEnabled and TargetGroup.

Then, when the configuration has been confirmed, rerun the command 'wuauclt
/resetauthorization /detectnow' and observe the results.

I have now followed your advice. After creating a new group, moving all
computers to this group and execute wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
everything works OK.
