WSUS - Download on Detect or on Install

I am deploying WSUS into a system with many WAN connected offices, and no
servers in any of those offices. I.E. we will not be putting WSUS servers
into the remote sites.

It looks to me that when I approve an update for "detect" the workstation
detects, and downloads when it checks in. When I approve the update for
install it installs the update at the time of day specified by WU (via a
group Policy).
I see an issue here that I cannot set a time at which the Detect (and
download) occurs.

I am not yet 100% sure about this behavior and would like someone to confirm
that this is the way it happens. The reason is that if I have three
workstations connected via a 64K link I would prefer that any downloads were
happening out of hours, rather than when the workstation detected an uopdates
availability.

Svend.

Hi,

An update set to "Detect Only" on the WSUS server will not trigger a
download of the update to the client.

And a fyi:

Please post WSUS related issues to the newsgroup dedicated to WSUS:
microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services

WebNews link to the WSUS newsgroup:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...pdate_services

Or use a newsgroup reader (default Outlook Express) to access this new
group:

Clicking on this link should open this group in OE:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...pdate_services

Thanks Torgeir,

That was what I wanted to hear.

BTW : as for the forum I just use a browser and just go to
support.microsoft.com and find teh Community Newsgroups.
I think the forum you are referring to is located in : English - Windows
Server - Management - Software Update Services.
I could only find the one location for this and even after you had poined
the way it was still tricky. The "Windows Update" forum (this one) has
pointer references to it seeded all over the news groups in almost any
location that it would make sense to have it.
I think the WSUS forum should have pointers in a few other locations too but
they seem to few and far between (I'n fact I could only find the one I
referred to above after five minutes of searching).
You would think a good place for a pointer referrence would be English -
Windows Update

Anyway - I live in hope,
Thanks again,
Svend,

Its real name versus its nickname and the implementation of the menus
make it hard to find too.

FYI there are two lists of all newsgroups, either grouped by category
or by newsgroup name sorted alphabetically. Here is a link to the latter.

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...s/default.aspx

(found via [Communities Home], [Newsgroups], "More Newsgroups")

Without Torgeir's explicit reference I would have stopped with this one:

<example>
microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs
</example>

(found by doing find (e.g. Ctrl-f in IE) for update)

Unfortunately the newsgroup name that you are after only appears after
expanding the microsoft.public.windows entry. Clearly we need either
an Expand All button on that menu or a proper search tool. I couldn't
find a way to get any more information via source files either. I was hoping
to find a XML list which would be formatted on the client side by a script.

This is an example of where OE would shine. Even if you don't use it
for posting if you could go here and download the list of newsgroups:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/

Then you could use its search instead. E.g. then pressing Ctrl-w in OE
and typing upd v (note the space between upd and the v) would show
you the names of all newsgroups associated with update services.
