WSUS downstream sync failure

Hi

When trying to synchronise downstream WSUS servers with their master I
get the following error:

InvalidOperationException: There is an error in XML document (1, 1650).
---> System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Ticks must be between
DateTime.MinValue.Ticks and DateTime.MaxValue.Ticks.

WSUS downstream servers are all identical intalls on w2k3 standard as is
the upstream master, they are in different time zones. All servers also
run SophosEM and have separate SQL engines for Sophos and WSUS. There
are no communication errors and sychronisation begins, yet fails without
any downloading with the above error.
I have made sure the servers meet the pre-requisites and have installed
the necessary upates to BITS. The error occurs during scheduled
synchronisations and manually initiated sync.

EventViewer shows only one instance of a generic WSUS Error Event ID:386
after each failure.

I have been trying to resolve this issue for several days, searching far
and wide whilst poking and proding a downstream server. A telephone call
to Microsoft support was an enlightening experience. A mistake I will
not make again.

Is there anyone who can offer a solution to this?
