Ric, the answer to this question comes in about six different flavors.
The Microsoft 'estimate' is based on the following:
[a] All languages
[b] All products
[c] All update classifications
[d] Express Installation Files
And, for that, the 24GB estimate was valid for about 30 days after WSUS was
released. :-)))
Your usage of 6GB is actually above average, but not necessarily abnormal,
if you have any of these options:
[a] More than one language
[b] Office Updates
[c] Service Packs
[d] Express Installation Files
[e] Unpurged expired/declined/unneeded updates
[f] Legacy service packs (e.g. XP SP1, Win2003SP3)
On my system, synchronizing Windows XP past SP2, Windows Server 2003 past
SP1, Office 2003, for English only, no Express Installation Files, and
regular file maintenance to purge expired and declined updates, my actual
disk consumption hovers around 1.5GB.
I would estimate that English-only updates for only Windows XP, assuming XP
SP2 as a baseline install, your total disk consumption should be less than
1GB. If you've approved/downloaded XP SP2, then add another 270MB to account
for that service pack. If you've enabled Express Installation Files,
multiply that by a factor of 5x, and that would just about account for 6GB
of space on a WSUS server servicing only XP SP2 systems.
