I have several Win2003 R2 SP2 servers rebooting without warning.
The owneers of the applications uses the server via RDP (TS, and APP Servers
"in-house" apps)

The user does NOT click to restart, but even clicking in the "restart later"
the computer reboots and the "WindowsUpdate.log" shows

==================================================
948 17b4 CltUI AU client reboot notification: user clicked Restart Later
774 AU WARNING: Initiating reboot since no user logged on
774 AU AU invoking RebootSystem (OnRebootNow)
774 Misc WARNING: SUS Client is rebooting system.
774 AU AU invoking RebootSystem (OnRebootRetry)
==================================================

Why? Can i avoid this? Sometimes a server with pending patch musb be online
for months... without interruptions

First, wrong group.

By default, WSUS will updste when no one is using the servers [or
workstation]. you are better off logging in and then locking the server.
Verify the GP settings.

As for updating, I've turned AU off. I manually update our servers. I've
downloaded the updates and use a batch file to run them

You've trimmed out the timestamps so it's hard to see what's going on, but I'd
be very surprised if the reboot was taking place while someone was logged on.
Please double-check this.

Assuming that the reboot happened when the user logged off, this is normal
behaviour if the Automatic Updates client is configured to install updates
automatically. Instead, configure Automatic Updates to download but not install
updates automatically, and install them manually at a time when you can reboot them.

It would be wise to see if there is any way to modify this requirement. Failing
to patch your server in a timely manner is a recipe for disaster.

In particular, once a patch has actually been installed it is important that the
server be rebooted promptly. Otherwise the operating system may become
unstable. In practice, this comes down to what I said above; don't install the
patches until you can reboot the server.

Harry.
