WSUS on SBS 2003 question

I have been batting my brains out trying to set up WSUS 3.0 on a SBS
2003 (not R2) server.
BPA only shows the old NIC driver. (no update available)
This was my first install of WSUS.
I could not get Windows XP sp3 boxes to show up in the WSUS management
console.
I installed it on a test SBS 2008 server and noticed the server
automatically added it self to the console.
(SBS 2008 was not at the SBS 2003 site)

I set up a test SBS 2003 R2 box at home (just for this test)
I installed .net 2, report viewer, Norton 10.1 (matching the site with
the problem)
Installed WSUS 3.0, only adding the critical and security updates.
The server did not automatically add it self to the console.

First question. Should the SBS 2003 server have added it self to the
console?

Second question. Does SBS 2003 (and R2) have the correct version of IIS
or do I have to upgrade this?
If needed, is the IIS upgrade available to d-load, or do I have to
purchase it for the site??

TIA
Rich W.

No. You'll need to configure a policy for the Domain Controllers OU in order
to get the SBS2003 box registered with WSUS.

SBS2008 does this automatically because WSUS3SP1 is built in to SBS2008.

They have the correct version of IIS. They all have the same version of IIS.

What IIS upgrade??? To my knowledge there's no "IIS upgrade", beyond those
obtained by applying OS service packs. You *should*, btw, apply Windows
Server 2003 Service Pack 2 to that SBS2003 system.

Now... to the question you did not ask. <g>

See if this addresses your Windows XP issues:

Lawrence,

I was trying to use the console instead of the GPO route.
I'm not clear on the GPO setup linking the policies.

Will get the update for the XP clients for the weekend and let you know
what happens.

Thank You
Rich W.

The console can be used to assign group memberships to systems that have
already registered with the WSUS Server, but you'll still need either Group
Policy, Local Policy, or a direct registry edit to configure the client
systems (including the WSUS Server itself) to actually register and report
to the WSUS Server.

The information needed for configuring policy and/or registry values can be
found in the WSUS Operations Guide.

Guess I have to experiment on the test box I just set up.
(before the 55 day to activate runs out)

Thanks
