WSUS synchronization error (metadata for the update was invalid)

I have been working with WSUS successfully for the past few months in a very
large environment with a SQL backend database. I recently began getting sync
errors during the nightly check for new updates. The following error appears
in the WSUS Sync report:
9/12/2005 The metadata for the update was invalid and could not be processed
successfully by the database. {2921d9aa-b5a5-44db-80ad-32cc4152643d}, 52

The event log on the WSUS box reports:
Synchronization failed. Reason: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK__tbXml__4F7CD00D'. Cannot insert
duplicate key in object 'tbXml'.
error creating dbo.tbXml entry
The statement has been terminated.
