??WTF -- My OEM XP on Varo won't authenticate? ???

New problem.
(In the last chapter, Fishy could not get her Sony Vaio running XP Home SP1
to connect to the Update site. Fishy reinstalled the WU Update Engine v6.
It connected! Then Fishy let it download Installer 3.1 and rebooted. It
connected again! Now WU says Fishy's computer has to pass "Windows Genuine
Authentication" and the damn thing failed. ... !!! ???? #$%^&*&^%$ WTF?

It's OEM. Preinstalled. I've got the disks at home. No trouble
registering or authenticating when I hooked the laptop up a couple of years
ago.

I WANT MY UPDATES! THIS COMPUTER HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED SINCE SPRING TERM,
LAST APRIL, AND IT IS VULNERABLE! IF I'M ON WIRELESS AND THERE'S AN
UNPATCHED SECURITY HOLE, THE WHOLE WORLD COULD GO UP IN FLAMES ANY MINUTE!

Please, PA Bear, Taurian, any other good people out there -- help me! Get
me past this WGA bugaboo.
