WU & MU download, but all fail

We had to do a repair installation of WinXP Home SP2.

System has activated, and Windows Update (and Microsoft Update) both list 83
updates to install. Automatic Updates indicates just the 75 recommended.

The system indicates they are downloaded, but it takes all of two seconds
for the install to fail. I have attempted some of the procedures in this
newsgroup to get WU or MU working, such as deleting the SoftwareDistribution
folder and re-registering the DLLs. I cannot find where the files are, so I
believe there is some index that indicates the files are already here, and
clearly they are not.

I wish to redownload these updates, and do not know where to reset this.

Any assistance in pointing me to this location (or steps to resolution) are
greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Dial a Fix

Dial-a-fix
Run this program with all the functions activated. --it may look as if the
scan has frozen. DAF is actually doing lots of shoveling and shuffling, so
don't interrupt it.
Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download Dial-a-fix
Direct download: Dial-a-fix v0.60.0.24 (2006-10-27)
File type: .zip archive, containing Dial-a-fix.exe and secedit.exe (for
Repair permissions purposes)
Size: 335,992 bytes
MD5sum: 2c23c77cc3ec0ce7206e66d48e7adfae

I hope this post is helpful, but we would highly appreciate it if you could
rate the pºst, so we can keep the community informed and saves somebody else
the hours of trawling through the web trying to find a solution.
