Alright, I'm tearing my hair out. The other day I decided
to rebuild my laptop... all fine and dandy right? Wrong.
After reinstalling Windows XP I attempted to run windows
update. After going through the initial WU setup I clicked
the link to scan for updates and after about 10 seconds the
following window appears: (Note: exact wording used)
"[Window Title] Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
Inconvenience."
It then goes on to explain the usual "send an error report
to MS" blah blah. Here is what the error report contains:
Error Signature:
szAppName:
szAppVer: 0.0.0.0
szModName: unknown
szModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 00000000
So in other words... the thing is blank... nothing... the
error is being created by.. " ".
Here is the event log entry:
Source: Application Error
Category (100)
Type: Error
Event ID 1000
Description: Faulting application, version 0.0.0.0,
faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address
0x00000000
So in other words the error really doesn't exist because it
isn't being created by any application or known module?
I'm seriously confused.
What have I done to try and counter the error?
1) Format/Reinstall windows with a different disk. Same
problem
2) format/Reinstalled again... same problem
3) ran dell diag on laptop RAM came back ok HD had
errors... got new HD.. Format/install... same problem.
The next thing I will try is swapping memory from another
laptop. Then if that doesn't work I will install windows
2000 and see what happens. Just a sidenote, there are no
other applications installed on this laptop.. this is a
completely new install of windows.
Another interesting note is that when this error occurs and
after you acknowledge it the UI starts to wig out. The
bubbly blue XP interface goes in and out and you are not
able to access network computers. So, anyone got any
advice. quick.. before I have ALL my hair torn out.
