WU Default Install Time Makes No Sence

The default time to install updates in XP and Vista is a poor choice when a
computer is set to download and install updates automatically.

When I jump on a computer I find MOST computers have pending updates to
install because Windows is set, by default, to install them at some really
late time at night when a majority of the worlds PC's are turned off. This
makes no sence!

How do Microsoft plan to distribute their updates if they have programmed a
big hurdle at the install point.

There should be an update released to set this time to a period IN THE DAY
that makes sence when computers will be turned on. Although it will have
trouble reaching the target audience. Lets hope this stuff up isn't in
Windows 7.

Actually, most companies leave their systems running at night, users logoff
but do not shutdown. This is done so that administration, including updates,
can be done while the system is not needed and will not interfere with
worker productivity.

I don't know of many people that want their work session interrupted in
midday by an update forcing a reboot. You can easily change the time of
updates, should you wish to, in the Windows Update dialog in the Control
Panel. To me, it makes more sense to leave a system to update when I'm not
likely to be using it.

I have my notebook in hybrid sleep at night. At 3 am, Windows wakes the
computer up and checks for updates and installs them at that time and then
puts the computer back to sleep. I sleep through it all!

Thatis true but in the age of climate change and power saving people are
turning them off more. I was wondering if Windows could have a system that
montors system use and finds out when the user is likely to have it on, off
or on and not in use and go by that.

It's a tricky one, i know Micosoft are very keen not to annoy users with
prompts because of the annoyance Vista has caused users.

Perhaps they need to work on updates that install in the background without
prompts or interruptions.

But it sounds like it is not a problem that bothers companies, just some
personal users so I can't see any improvements being made here.

Perhaps there should be a question when starting Windows for the first time
and setting it up. Something like, "This is the default time Windows
installs updates, would you like to change it?"

As to security, my Vista system is set to the default recommended option to
install updates. This is my home system. There are many times and reasons
I completely power off this system before the 3:00 A.M. schedule. However
the next time I turn on the system and go on line the updates are down
loaded in the background. If I again power down (turn off) the system
before the 3:00 A.M. schedule, Vista will advise that it is going to install
updates and shut down. Vista will also offer you the option of shutting
down without installing the updates. That being said, normally I go ahead
and install the updates when I see the Icon in the notification area
alerting me of updates.

Recommendation, go to: Start>Control Panel\Security\Windows Update _then
select the ? mark near the upper right hand corner. This will open the help
files "Updating your computer" if you should review this information it will
help with other questions and perhaps the concerns you have.

(From Help Files) It depends on the automatic updating option_ "you
choose". _ If _"you choose"_ the recommended option, updates are installed
at 3:00 A.M. _"or on a schedule that you choose"._ If you turn off your
computer before the scheduled time, you can install updates before shutting
down.

(From Help Files) If your computer is in one of the power-saving states
(Sleep or Hibernate) during a scheduled update, and if your computer is
plugged in to a power source, Windows will wake your computer long enough to
install new updates. If your computer is running on battery power, however,
Windows will not install updates. Windows will try to install them instead
at the next scheduled installation time.

There are no quick Bailouts for an un-patched system that has been
compromised. Its your choice.
