WU downloads but Installations Fail

WU disappeared for a while, but is now back (MS works in mysterious ways).
Updates download with no problem, but when installation is selected, it just
freezes on Initializing Installation. Left it for 8 hours the other day,
just to ensure that I wasn't being 'impatient'.
I now have a pile of 35 (at the last count) of updates that have downloaded
but won't install.
Tried bypassing Automatic updates, and downloading directly from the site
(in case it is WAU), but was informed I needed the WGA (although all
indications appear to be that I already have it). Needless to say, this
downloaded but also failed to install.
Am running XP Pro, and ensured that Windows Installer was running.
Have tried to decipher the Windows Update log (which is now very long!) and
can find: WARNING: WU client fails CClientCallRecorder::BeginInstallUpdates2
from WindowsUpdate with error 0x80240016, and WARNING:
ISusInternal::BeginInstallUpdates2 failed, hr=80240016 (These were the WGA
update from the site).
Can't find this error message on the KB.
Anyone have some suggestions?

Try rebooting.

Me too - the yellow shield is DRIVING ME MAD!! And I'm wasting so much time
on this. If either of you have fixed it, I'd really appreciate knowing the
answer!

Thanks.
