WU Error message is driving me NUTS!

What in the world is wrong with these people!? Why do I keep getting this
stupid error message: Error number: 0x8007043C when I try to get updates? I
have XP Home and am on DSL connection, running in safe mode because had to do
a fix from trouble with errors in other programs not working well. Now I
can't even get updates here after I got everything else fixed or updated the
best I could. What's up with that?

0x8007043C
Means: ERROR_NOT_SAFEBOOT_SERVICE.
Translation: You need a service which is not available in safe mode.
