WU Failing at latest version install

I am attempting to update my sisters Windows XP Home system (SP1 - also
logged in as administrator) due to it only recently coming online and having
issues with Viruses, and Trojans - Now I've cleaned the system with Spybot,
Ad-ware, SpywareBlaster, and is now running McAfee VirusScan v8.0 (which is
disabled during WU) but whenever I visit Windows Update it simply fails at
the point where it updates to the latest WU version (i.e. WGA Install). The
update downloads fine, but at the install point I am simply presented with a
fail message.

Download the WGA Diagnostic Tool first:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
Run it and then go to Windows Update to see if that resolves the issue.

You could also attempt this:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Open: window type regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Click OK
4. Do the same for the following, clicking OK after each line is entered

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll

Now try to access Windows Update. If the system still can not, then the
malware may have damaged/corrupted system files/settings.
Suggest you run sfc /scannow to ensure that required files are intact.

I tried what you suggested Mow, it removed a few files which were -
oembios.bin, oembios.dat, oembios.sig, danim.dll, ntvdmd.dll. But the issue
with uploads downloading but not installing remains.
